Terms of service
These terms apply to the Caretly rendering API, the console and the playground at caretly.dev (together "the service"), provided by Jaap Elst in the Netherlands ("Caretly", "we"). By creating an account or using an API key you agree to them on behalf of the business you represent.
1. Who can use Caretly
Caretly is for businesses and professionals, not consumers. You must be authorised to accept these terms for your organisation. Your organisation is responsible for everything done with its account and keys.
2. Accounts and API keys
- Keep your login and API keys secret. Keys belong on your servers, not in browser code or public repositories.
- Revoke a key in the console as soon as you suspect it leaked. Usage with a key counts as your usage until it is revoked.
- Test keys are free and stamp a TEST watermark on every label. Labels with a watermark may not be used for shipping.
3. Acceptable use
Do not use the service to break the law, to send content you have no right to process, to attack or overload the service, to get around its limits or billing, or to resell it as a rendering service of your own without our written agreement. We may suspend keys or accounts that do so, with notice where we reasonably can.
4. Prices and payment
- Live keys are billed per label at the price shown on the pricing page or agreed in writing. Every page in a response is one label, including ^PQ copies; a PNG response is one label; failed requests and test keys are free.
- Usage is invoiced monthly in arrears through Stripe. Prices exclude VAT. Invoices are due when issued and are charged to your payment method.
- If a payment fails, live keys are paused until it is resolved; test keys keep working.
- We can change prices with at least 30 days' notice by email. The new price applies from the first billing period after that.
5. The service
- We work hard to keep Caretly fast, accurate and available, but provide it as is and without a guaranteed uptime unless agreed in writing. Rendering follows the ZPL specification; check that output is correct for your printers and carriers before relying on it.
- We may improve or change the service. We give at least 30 days' notice before removing a feature you use or making an incompatible change to the API.
6. Data processing
Labels you send usually contain personal data, such as recipients' names and addresses. For that data you are the controller and Caretly is your processor, and this section is our data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR:
- We process label data only to render the output you request, on your documented instructions (your API requests), and keep it only in memory for the duration of the request.
- Everyone who works on Caretly is bound to confidentiality. We secure processing with appropriate measures, including encryption in transit and access restrictions.
- We use the sub-processors listed in our privacy policy; for rendering, only our EU hosting providers. We will inform you of new sub-processors in advance, so you can object.
- We help you with data subject requests, security incidents and data protection impact assessments where needed, notify you without undue delay of a personal data breach, and give you the information needed to show compliance.
- Because we do not store label data, there is nothing to return or delete when the service ends.

7. Intellectual property
You keep all rights to your labels and output. We keep all rights to the service. The renderer's source code is published at github.com/jaapieaapie1/zpl under its own licence terms.
8. Liability
Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amounts you paid us in the 12 months before the event that caused it. We are not liable for indirect or consequential damage, such as lost profits, missed shipments or lost data. These limits do not apply to damage caused by our intent or deliberate recklessness.
9. Ending the service
You can stop at any time by revoking your keys and cancelling your subscription in the console; usage until then is invoiced. We can end your access with 30 days' notice, or at once if you seriously breach these terms. Sections 6, 7 and 8 continue to apply after the end.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We email account holders at least 30 days before material changes take effect; using the service after that means you accept them.
11. Law and disputes
Dutch law applies. Disputes go to the competent court in the Netherlands. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.
